Summary

In many cities, the growing dispersal of residential areas and economic activities is leading to the need for personal vehicles for travel. Urban sprawl often results in increased travel distances and travel times for both public and private transport. This, in turn, entails various economic costs, including environmental degradation, increased costs of municipal and government services, reduced accessibility and economic opportunities for non-drivers. All this leads to an increase in transport costs in general.
Reducing urban sprawl; promoting the development of territories focused on the use of public transport; creating compact, walkable neighborhoods that reduce per capita car-kilometres traveled are priorities for reducing the need for car-based mobility. Spatial planning and land-use policies have sustainable long-term implications: land-use decisions made today will tie cities to certain development patterns for many years to come. In this context, models of compact, denser, and functionally mixed urban development, combined with public transport planning, have been highlighted as a way to avoid inefficient and costly spatial development models while encouraging citizens to move away from personal cars.
